I am not sure why Microsoft made the change in the first place, but it’s their OS, so they know it best. However, if you open the Task Manager, you will see a process named ‘Windows Explorer’ instead of File Explorer running even with a folder open in the background. Note that after the release of Windows 10, Microsoft has renamed Windows Explorer to File Explorer. Imagine a situation where you need to use a particular file urgently, and the File Explorer stops responding or doesn't launch. File Explorer is the tool that you use to browse the files saved on the hard drive on Windows 10 OS.
